They needed to beat Whitefish by two goals to stay in the hunt for a conference championship. The Columbia Falls girls soccer team rose to the challenge Tuesday night, beating the Lady Bulldogs 5-3 in a physical affair at home.

The game was knotted up 2-2 at the half, but in the second half Josie Windauer put them up by one and then Lakia Hill headed in a rebound off a Windauer shot to make it 4-2. Hill added another insurance goal to make it 5-2. Whitefish would score a late goal to make it interesting, but it wasn’t enough.

The two Hannahs — Callender and Gedlaman — scored in the first half for the Cats.

The Lady Wildcats now need to win out the season, or Whitefish has to lose a game, to secure the conference crown. Both teams are now 4-1 in conference play, but the two goals the Cats have over Whitefish breaks the tie, because Whitefish only beat the Cats by one goal earlier this year.

Last week the team went 2-0-1. The Wildcats tied Stevensville Tuesday on the road, 1-1, beat Polson 6-5 at home Thursday and Libby 8-1 at home Saturday.

Against Stevi, the girls had 30 shots on goal to the Lady Yellowjackets 7, but just couldn’t find the back of the net. The girls built a 4-0 lead against the Lady Pirates in the first 19 minutes, but Polson battled back and the game was tied 5-5 at the 64-minute mark.

Windauer knocked in a shot with four minutes remaining to get the victory.

Against Libby, it was all Wildcats.

Hannah Gedlaman had four goals and Windauer had a hat trick in the victory.

In the Polson game, coach O’Brien Byrd said they simply let off the gas and let the Pirates back into the game.

Gedlaman now has 13 goals on the season, Windauer has 12, but the girls also have scoring threats in Hannah Callendar, Hill and Kaylee Ash.

Hill is just a freshman but is getting better each game.

“It’s nice we’re not dependent on one player,” he said.

They travel to Polson Saturday and then wrap up the regular season next week with a Tuesday home game against Bigfork and then on the road against Libby Oct. 6.
