Defensive lapses for both the boys and girls soccer teams added up to losses for both squads against Northwest Conference rival Whitefish last week.

The boys lost 3-2 while the girls lost 2-1 on the road against the Bulldogs last Tuesday.

Jakob Iken and Tristan Grien scored for the boys, while Hannah Gedlaman scored the lone goal for the girls.

Grien’s goal was a sweet header on a corner kick from his brother, Jakob, to cut the lead to one with nine minutes left.

The boys couldn’t find the back of the net after that, however.

On the girls’ side, Hannah Gedlaman found the back of the net at the 17-minute mark, and they just missed a few shots in the first half that could have blown the game open.

But Whitefish made the best of their chances and scored with just three minutes to play to seal the victory.

Coach O’Brien Byrd said it was two different tales, however. He noted the young boys team played well against a more experienced Whitefish team that’s played six games, while the Cats have only played three.

“We gave Whitefish everything we had,” he said.

But the girls, considered one of the top teams in the state, seemed to fear the Lady Bulldogs, he said.

“They played with fear, rather than confidence,” he said. “We can’t approach a game with that kind of attitude.”

He said both squads will make adjustments for the Bulldogs when they face them at home Sept. 26.

The teams travel to Stevensville Tuesday after presstime, while they’ll play Polson at home Thursday. Boys are at 5:30 p.m. Girls are at 7 p.m.

The Polson game is a makeup because schools were closed due to threats over the weekend.

The teams also face Libby at home Saturday. Game times are at 5 and 7 p.m.
