Cats will face Cowboys on what promises to be a frozen field

Capping off a 5-0 Northwest A conference record, the Columbia Falls football squad will host Miles City this Saturday on what’s likely to be a frozen field in the quarterfinal round of the state A playoffs.

Custer County (8-2) dropped Lewistown 42-26 to advance out of the first round.

After a shaky start, the Cowboys have rounded into form. Columbia Falls coach Jaxon Schweikert said last week that he thought the Cowboys were the best team out of the east.

The Cowboys have a solid running game and a mobile quarterback in Gabe Gundlach. After losing their first two games by a handful of points, they’ve now won eight in a row.

The Wildcats are coming off a winning streak of their own, having won their last five. Their only loss of the year was against Dillon, and that was by two points.

The weather promises to be cold, with a chance of snow and highs about 31. The Cats have used a balanced attack to beat their opponents this year. Colten McPhee has been averaging more than 100 yards rushing a game, and senior Logan Kolodejchuk is great in short yardage situations. Quarterback Austin Green is also mobile and the team’s second leading rusher.

The Cats defense has been lights out, holding conference opponents to just 25 points total over five games.

Gametime is 1 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for students.

If the Cats beat Miles City, they’d be on the road in the semis to face the winner of the Dillon-Sidney game.
