Jones wins javelin

Columbia Falls native and University of Montana senior Daniel Jones uncorked the longest throw of his career in the best possible moment, winning the Big Sky Conference javelin championship on Saturday on the campus of Sacramento State University.

Jones took first with a distance of 65.74 meters (215 feet, 8 inches) on his second attempt at the Big Sky outdoor track championships, winning the event by more than 13 feet.

Jones also holds the Columbia Falls school record in the javelin, at 202 feet, 6 inches, set in 2012.

Grant wins cycling championship

Columbia Falls cyclist Rose Grant overcame a series of injuries to win her fourth consecutive USA Cycling Marathon Mountain Bike National Championships on Iron Mountain in Arkansas recently.

Grant outsprinted Massachusetts’ Crystal Anthony in three hours, 46 minutes and 55 seconds to collect the Stars-and-Stripes jersey at the finish line. Anthony finished with the same time and Colorado’s Amy Beisel was third in 4:05:32.
