On June 9, a student at Glacier Gateway Elementary was diagnosed with mumps. Mumps is a virus that is spread much like influenza or the common cold. From now until June 22, anyone exposed may begin showing signs or symptoms, and can be contagious up to seven days before showing symptoms and for a few days afterward.

The school put out a warning on its Facebook page to parents.

Until June 22, parents should monitor their children for signs and symptoms including swelling of the salivary gland (below the ears at the jaw line), fever, fatigue, headache, pain or difficulty swallowing, sore throat, or swollen testicles.

If your student is immune-compromised, has not been vaccinated for mumps, or has any of the symptoms, even if they are fully vaccinated, contact your health care provider.

Call the Flathead City County Health Department at 751-8110 with any questions.
