Snow, over several days, should add up

A long steady snow event could bring 8 to 16 inches of snow to the valleys and as much as two feet to places like Marias Pass starting tomorrow and running through Tuesday night.

National Weather Service meteorologist Trent Smith said the snow should start late tomorrow afternoon and should be steady through the weekend into early next week.

Places south of Columbia Falls could see a wintry mix of rain and snow, but Columbia Falls north should stay all snow, with tempaeratures in the upper 20s to mid 30s.

A more intense storm could form Sunday night into Monday.

The valley snows levels are currently above normal, but the mountain snowpack lagged behind in January. After a cold and snowy start, it’s been dry since mid-January and the Flathead River Basin snowpack is just 76 percent of average.

It did get cold Thursday night, however.

Temperatures in Hungry Horse dropped down to 10 below zero Thursday night. West Glacier dipped down to 18 below and it was 22 below at Polebridge.
