MatCat pair take fourth in Great Falls

The MatCats earned a pair of fourth place finishes in Great Falls over the weekend as Ben Windauer was fourth in the 170-pound weight class and Colton McPhee was fourth in the 182-pound division. The team finished 11th overall at the meet.

Windauer pinned Jefferson’s Brett Hale Friday to reach the championship semifinals, where he lost a tough 3-2 decision to Jacob Fritzler of Billings Senior. Windauer bounced back with a pin of Bozeman’s Brig Johnston in the consolation semifinals before being pinned by Brock Bushfield of Billings Skyview in the third/fourth place match in 1:46.

McPhee was pinned in the quarterfinals but came back with a major decision over Glendive’s Nelson Crisafulli in the consolation semifinals, 14-6. McPhee lost a close match to Livingston’s Shane Gibson in the third/fourth place match, 3-1 in overtime.

Jakob Freeman also placed for the MatCats in the 205-pound class as he finished eighth.

“Our kids are learning to battle. There were some physical matches this weekend, more physical than we have been used to,” head coach Jessie Schaefer said. “We are going to have to learn from that.”

The MatCats were at home Tuesday as they hosted Frenchtown, Flathead and Sand Point/Libby. The team will face Browning for a dual Friday and Saturday before heading into the holiday break.
