The Columbia Falls swim team opened the season at the Summit in Kalispell over the weekend as the girls earned eighth place at the Kalispell Swim Invitational while the boys were ninth.

“I thought this first meet went really well. We were very happy with how we swam. I believe we had about 16 best times from our swimmers at the meet, that’s a pretty good place to begin the season,” head coach Emily von Jentzen said. “We saw a few areas where we will need to put a little extra focus in practice, like turns and some technical aspects for our newer swimmers.”

Emerald Templin was the top finisher for either squad at the meet as she earned fifth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:22.87. Russell Albin led the boys with a sixth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.19 seconds.

The girls also were sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay as they finished with a time of 2:06.28.

Coach von Jentzen said she was happy with the team’s performance, in part because they did well with a short amount a practice time.

“There is only so much that you can get done in 10 days of practice,” she said. “The most important thing is that the kids are coachable, and we have a good group of kids that are willing to take direction. They all have a desire to improve, and that’s great.”

The girls compiled 99 points to finish eighth as Missoula Sentinel won the meet with 459 points. The boys finished ninth with 59 points, 374.5 points behind the top team, Great Falls.

The Cats will be back in action Dec. 16 as they swim at the Great Falls Invitational.
