A home off Gladys Glen drive in Coram was destroyed by a late afternoon fire Tuesday. No one was home when the fire started, said Coram-West Glacier Fire Chief Matt Cox. The house was completely engulfed when the call came in — a passing train saw the fire and reported it.

Cox said pets perished in the blaze, including two dogs and several cats. The house had a pet door, but during a fire, pets often go to what they think is a safe place in the house, Cox noted. The home was a total loss. The cause is still under investigation.

The family who lived there was being put up by friends. Cox said he didn’t know who the owners of the residence were.

Hungry Horse-Martin City responded with mutual aid.
