Work on a project to rebuild the sidewalks and overhaul U.S. Highway 2 from Hilltop Road to the Flathead River Bridge is set to start Aug. 14.

Knife River is the general contractor for the project. The project will feature asphalt paving, asphalt milling, sidewalks, curb and gutter, signing, striping and lighting improvements. Project working days will be Monday through Saturday until winter shutdown on Nov. 16 with work resuming in spring 2018.

The work will first center on sidewalks and curbing — there’s about a mile and half of sidewalk and curb work included in the project.

The existing sidewalks will remain the same width, but new sidewalks will be wider — 7.5 feet — and the light poles will be taken out of the middle of the sidewalks and moved to the edge of the right-of-way.

Work on the highway itself is slated for after Labor Day to avoid at least some of the summer tourism traffic.
