October 3, 1946

The Wildcats had a week to lick their woulds following a 41-0 walloping by the top Class B team in the district, Libby. Construction on a new water supply system for Columbia Falls was halted, pending a third vote on bond issues valuing $85,000 - the headline claimed the “legal groundwork” was faulty.

60 years ago

September 28, 1956

Flathead National Forest was set to acquire 10 acres and 13 buildings from the Bureau of Reclamation at the Hungry Horse Project. Glacier National Park Ranger Elmer Fladmark was honored as the first ranger in Region 2, including Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, and plains states, to receive an outstanding performance review. Five hundred people had signed a petition to get a $1,490,000 bond issue to build a new Columbia Falls High School on the upcoming ballot.

50 years ago

September 30, 1966

Glacier National Park was winding up $3 million in repair projects following the 1964 flood. A young bull moose was killed after becoming trapped in downed phone lines in West Glacier. Assistant Chief Ranger Harry Reynolds, District Ranger Robert Sellers and Ranger Robert Wasem responded and after tranquilizing the moose, began working to untangle it. The animal did not survive. Meat was donated to the Montana Veterans Home.

40 years ago

September 30, 1976

Investigations into the fatal grizzly mauling of Mary Pat Mahoney, 22, at Many Glacier, were ongoing. With forest fires in Kalispell, the Giefer grizzly was less of a priority, though it was reported that the bear had managed to ditch the radio collar it had been fitted with. Another bear initially believed to be the Giefer griz was captured. The 12 year old bear died during the tranquilizing process.

October 1, 1986

Salaried and hourly workers at CFAC were to receive a portion of the company’s first-year profit on October 15. Spokesman Jack Canavan said CFAC officials were “pleased with the performance of the past year.” Kalispell City Court clerk Patsy J. Wagner, 50, was charged with felony theft after being accused of taking money from the office. A young bald eagle that had been rescued after falling from its nest in Glacier was tracked via radio transmitter to the Wyoming-Idaho border some 400 miles away on its first outing.

October 3, 1996

A three-year old black bear had to be euthanized after being struck by a car on Highway 2 East near Mosquito Flats. Columbia Falls police officer Ed Wright diffused an armed confrontation after responding to a domestic violence call. The community was working to shed light on skateboarding issues, including the negative attitudes skaters tended to receive towards their sport.

Brandy the Brittany spaniel was found near Ford Cabin on the way to Kintla Lake. She had been lost at Glen’s Lake near Eureka on Aug. 24 and had managed to travel 50 miles to Glacier.
