Soccer teams stay unbeaten

The Columbia Falls girls soccer team continues to roll over its early season opponents, dropping Frenchtown 5-0 away and Bigfork 5-0 at home last week to go 3-0 on the early season.

Kaylee Ashe had two goals against the Broncs and Hannah Gedlaman had a hat trick by the half against Bigfork. While the offensive output is impressive, the defense has been stellar as well — the Kats haven’t allowed a goal in their first three games.

Coach Greg Trenerry was pleased with the team’s effort against Bigfork.

“They did a great job passing, finding a rhythm and playing two-three touch soccer,” he said. He also credited the defense, which is largely led by underclassmen.

The boys beat Frenchtown 3-1. Logan Stephens led the squad with two goals.

The match had a lot of fouls.

“It was a very physical game,” coach O’Brien Byrd said. “There were 22 fouls between both teams. Frenchtown took the game to us, rather than vice-versa.”

Still, the boys responded.

“It was an early season wake-up call,” Byrd said. “Better now than later.”

The Cats didn’t play Bigfork after the Vikings canceled their season due to the lack of players.

The Cats will make up the matches with games against Stillwater Christian School. On Sept. 13 they travel to Kalispell for a 5 p.m. game and on Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. the Cats will play them again under the new lights at Flip Darling Field.

The competition for both teams promises to get tougher this week, as both teams travel to Belgrade and Livingston Friday and Saturday. Belgrade girls beat Whitefish 1-0 and the boys clocked Libby 8-0.

The Livingston boys beat Whitefish 4-0 last week, while the girls lost to Whitefish 7-0.

The Belgrade boys and Billings Central are the top two teams in the East, Byrd noted.

“They’ll be a real test,” Byrd said. “Can’t wait to face them.”
