Aug. 29, 1946

Summer was coming to a close for the estimated 635 children enrolled across School District 6; a shortage of teachers was expected to cause a “serious handicap” for the district. Glacier National Park was expecting large crowds for Labor Day weekend with an anticipated 3,500 visitors on Sunday before numbers returned to the average of 2,000 visitors per day that the Park had seen during the season.

Aug. 31, 1956

“Kishenena” was chosen as the official name of the yet-to-be constructed highway completing a circle 8 highway system between Waterton and Glacier National Parks. The Hungry Horse Dam was concluding its season of tours. Nearly 27,000 people had taken the 35-minute tour of the dam during the summer.

50 years ago

Sept. 2, 1966

A public meeting in Hungry Horse saw the strong opposition, 49-2, of proposed cloud seeding in the area of the reservoir over the winter in order to increase snow and therefore increase water for the lake. A ceremony was scheduled for later in the month to mark the opening of F.H. Stoltze Land and Lumber Co.’s 10,000-acre tree farm, the first tree farm by a Flathead mill.

Sept. 2, 1976

Frank Boylan, Jr., 20, and Carla Holm Logan, 20, of Lakeside, and Terry Miller, 28, and Cheri Miller, 20, of Columbia Falls were awaiting arraignment after being arrested for the armed robbery of the Columbia Falls B&B store. The Giefer Creek grizzly had returned to the Tuchuck Creek area and had again eluded captors.

Sept. 3, 1986

The National Park Service won the legal battle instigated by Frances Lordan and Robert Hilligoss over the couple’s claim that Glacier National Park had been negligent in adequately warning them about bears prior to the couple being mauled in 1984. Yvone Waslovich, 34, of Calgary, Alberta, was killed a quarter mile east of Logan Pass. She slipped on wet rocks while taking a photo at a turnout and tumbled down the hillside 50 feet before going over a 100-foot cliff. When rangers arrived, they rappelled down and found Waslovich alive, but she had a heart attack and died at the scene.

Aug. 29, 1996

Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks reported illegal perch in Lion Lake, just four years after biologists poisoned the lake to purge it of illegal, invasive non-native species that were threatening native populations. Rob Macal and Mark Robison, both of Columbia Falls, pulled off quite the feat of endurance, climbing 10 mountains in 27 hours.

Aug. 31, 2006

Dan Gill of Martin City lost everything, including his prosthetic leg, when his house burned down. He had only been living in the house for about two weeks when the fire happened.

Bo James Motichka, 30, of Columbia Falls, died when the truck he was a passenger in swerved to miss a deer, over corrected, and rolled into the ditch on Highway 93. Motichka was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.
