Peacock ties school record in cross country

Freshman Kimberly Peacock tied the school record in cross-country at the Whitefish Invitational Thursday. Peacock, who won the race easily, ran the course in 18:19.78, which tied Samantha Mundel’s 2014 mark to the tenth of a second, said coach Jim Peacock.

Sage Wanner also had a personal best as he lead the race from start to finish. Wanner clocked a 15:44.81. The boys won the meet, the girls took third, just one point behind Polson. Whitefish won the girls meet.

It was an odd race, not because of the course, but because what happened on the course. The race was set up at the Whitefish Lake Golf Course North Course. But there were also golfers on the course playing rounds. Apparently a private party of about a dozen golfers were trying to play as runners ran the race. No one was hit by a ball, but one errant shot landed close to the finish line.

The golfers were cordial about the matter and waited for the runners.

Coach Jim Peacock was pleased with the race, but not happy with the fact that golfers were on the course during the race.

“The varsity teams are running exactly where they need to be coming into the last two weeks of the season,” Peacock said. “They have strong goals set for the state meet, and they are doing everything right to get ready for that meet. We have transitioned into speed work for the tail end of the season, and this meet showed that. When we are running fresh at the end of the season, I am looking forward to seeing what might happen.”

Peacock noted the boys all ran personal bests and the girls were without Genevieve DeLorme, who was out due to an injury. DeLorme has been the team’s second-fastest runner all season.

The team travels Saturday to the Western A Classic in Fairmont Hot Springs for the divisional meet. The state meet is close to home this year — in Kalispell Oct. 22 at Rebecca Farm.
