Dean Clarence Sturz

Dean Clarence Sturz, 58, suffering from complications of brain cancer, slipped peacefully from this world on the evening of May 3, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Dec. 18, 1957 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin to Duane and Janet Schretenthaler Sturz. With four rambunctious brothers, his early years were filled with adventures both in town and on Grandpa’s farm. Graduating from Memorial High School in 1976 and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in 1981, he was an academic standout and multi-sport athlete. Dean made lifelong friends during those years and often told stories of their escapades. On July 22, 1983, he married Constance Kleist in Eau Claire. The following year they moved to Columbia Falls where they made their home and raised three children.

Dean was employed by F.H. Stoltze Land and Lumber for almost 31 years, the majority of that time as sales manager. For many years he served as a representative of Stoltze for several industry organizations, including Western Wood Products Association, North American Wholesale Lumber Association and Flathead Building Association. He was also a member and past president of the Columbia Falls Area Chamber of Commerce. Dean was a quiet, intelligent, dependable man with a goofy sense of humor and strong work ethic, which he passed on to his children.

“It is what it is” was his favorite saying and, more often than not, he put his own needs and desires aside so that others would be more comfortable. 

As an avid hiker, hunter and fisherman Dean enjoyed all Montana had to offer. He didn’t always catch the biggest fish, have a successful hunting season, or make it to the top of the mountain, but he always embraced each experience to the fullest.

Dean was preceded in death by his mother, Janet; his brother, Frank; and his grandparents. He is survived by his wife Connie; his children Ben, Jon, Sarah and her fiancé Lee Allen; grandson Jacob; parents Duane and Margaret; brothers, Tim (Sally), Jim (Stacy), Mike (Penny), brother-in-law and hunting/fishing partner Kevin; and several nieces, nephews and in-laws.

A celebration of life was held Tuesday, May 10, at the F.H. Stoltze Land and Lumber conference room. Memorial donations may be made to brain cancer research or the Jacob Sturz Education Fund at Whitefish Credit Union, 320 Nucleus Ave., Columbia Falls, MT 59912.
