West Shore Happenings

| March 21, 2016 8:25 AM

Greetings, West Shore neighbors & friends:  =Below is the latest update on what is happening in our area. Compiled by

Dan Benesch.

1:  Community Garden meeting Saturday, April 2nd.   10 AM- Noon  (Just before the Spring Work Day)

This is the first meeting of 2016.  Come meet your neighbors and swap seeds and starts.   Free seeds for everyone that reserves a plot at the community garden this season.     The meeting starts at 10 AM, Saturday April 2nd at the Baptist Church.  (Just up the hill from the Homestead Cafe.)

P.S.  It is still way too early to put starter plants in the ground, but you should be able to sow seeds for cold hardy plants like peas, lettuce, carrots, spinach, radishes, and beets.

2:    Lakeside Community Garden “Spring Work Day”  Sat the 2nd. 1-3 PM

Yeah!  It is FINALLY time to start getting our community garden ready for the upcoming season.   There is lots to do and we could sure use your help.

We will be topping off the beds, setting out the hoses, picking up trash, etc.   If you are not into shoveling and wheel borrow work, but would like to help make the event more enjoyable, feel free to bring cookies, punch, and misc. finger food.  It all adds to the festive nature of the experience.   The event is only two hours, from 1 to 3 PM.  The garden is in front of the Baptist Church.  (See garden meeting info above for directions.)

3:   Reserve your community garden plot for 2016.

We have lots of raised beds available to rent and the soil is very rich.  Why not reserve your very own 4’x8’ plot?   We even have elevated beds for folks that have difficulty bending over.  Only $25/year. Questions?  Email Gina at: akesidegarden59922@gmail.com .

4:  Captain’s Award Banquet March 24

The “Captains Award” Banquet is coming up on Thursday, March 24th, at the “Rack Shack” in Somers.  Cocktails at 5:30, dinner at 6:30.   This is where our community recognizes the most outstanding community volunteer of 2015.  This year’s winner is: Steve Patyk.    This is a fun social event and a great place to meet the movers and shakers of the West Shore.   In addition, the board of directors for the West Shore Community Library will be recognized as the Chamber Member of the Year.    $25/person in advance, $30 at the door.  See www.lakesidesomers.org for more details.

5:   500 FREE Fruit Trees for Somers & Lakeside.   Project status report.

Over the last two years we have given away over 300 apricot & plum tree starts.  It is likely we will have that many to give away this year alone.   If you come to the “Spring Work Day” on April 2nd you can pick up as many as six.  The grape and raspberry plants will be here by the end of April.
