The Bet That Launched Filet-O-Fish

Back in 1962, even as McDonald's founder Ray Kroc had plans to launch a new Hula Burger (complete with pineapple and cheese), a franchisee in Cincinnati, Ohio, was urging a national rollout of the tasty breaded whitefish sandwich he'd begun serving to accommodate Roman Catholics observing Lent.
So the two men made a wager: Whichever item sold the most on a certain Friday would be added to the permanent menu. And the rest, as they say, is history.
