Marietta Louise Downes, 79, a longtime resident of the North Fork and for the past 5 years of Columbia Falls, passed away peacefully on Jan. 17, 2016.

Marietta is survived by her husband of 55 years, Lee Downes, and her six children: Cheri Taylor, Doreen Belstad, Hal Christenson, Dan Christenson, Kerri Kelly, Marilee Montano; 13 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. She was well-known for her cooking skills and hospitality. Marietta always had a dessert prepared, a warm cup of coffee, and a story about something that happened on the property for anyone who stopped by. She supported the North Fork community and was involved in  North Valley Search and Rescue for many years. Mom loved all animals except mice. She helped raise Henry Hawk, Hungry Jack the Coyote, a great horned owl and way too many chipmunks to mention. She has a special affinity for hummingbirds and they would often follow her into the house to get fed. Donations in her name can be made to the North Valley Search and Rescue or the North Valley Food Bank. To honor her wishes no services will be held at this time. A celebration of life is being planned and will be announced at a later date.

Columbia Mortuary is caring for the Downes family.
