They were down several players. It didn’t matter. The Columbia Falls girls soccer team hammered Stevensville 8-0 at home Saturday. The Kats had a slim squad as a couple of players have injuries and others didn’t have enough practices to play. So coach Greg Trenerry had just two subs on the bench.

But the Kats poured it on anyway, racking up five goals in the first 30 minutes of play. Junior Hannah Gedlaman led the squad with two goals and two assists.

But the goal of the day came from Anna Pickard. Pickard is the backup goalie, but she played most of the game on offense. She found the back of the net on a feed from Gedlaman at the 75-minute mark.

“The girls stepped it up,” Trenerry said. “They figured it out and did well.”

The Kats open conference play Saturday with a home game against Bigfork. Game time is 11 a.m. for the girls and 1 p.m. for the boys. Next Tuesday is a key conference matchup, as the teams face Whitefish on the road.
