Cats hammer Stevensville
The Columbia Falls boys soccer team hammered Stevensville in its home opener Saturday, 7-0. The Cats are much improved over last year, both offensively and defensively.
Logan Stephens, John Gilk and Jon Sigurdsson each had two goals apiece. Gilk’s second goal was a beauty. He kicked a corner kick and Stevi kicked it back out to him. He then kicked it back in on a bending shot that found the back of the net. It was the first varsity goals of Gilk’s career. Storm Kemppainen also scored — his first goal ever as well. This is Kemppainen’s first year playing varsity soccer — he’s a senior.
Sigurdsson, a foreign exchange student from Iceland, showed his moxie and Stephens looked in better form than last year, when he led the team in scoring.
Coach O’Brien Byrd was pleased with the team’s play.
“Our passing and rhythm of play was up-tempo and crisp and the communication was wonderful,” he said. “We’re keeping our feet firmly on the ground and our head out of the clouds. This is going to be a long season.”
