Scott Matthew Downing

Scott Matthew Downing passed peacefully on July 17, 2016, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Kalispell to Gerald and Diane Downing on Aug. 1, 1963, and spent most of his life in the Flathead Valley.

While not large in stature, Scott had a huge heart, and as one friend put it, was “deceptively strong,” and was an accomplished arm wrestler and boxer in his younger days. Scott was very social, and enjoyed spending time with friends and family, and could always be counted on when needed.

Scott was a hard worker and excelled as an auto and machinery mechanic, carpenter and sawyer — cutting firewood was one of his favorite activities.

Scott had three sons, Dustin, Derrick and Douglas; and one granddaughter, Denolly.

He was preceded in death by parents, Gerald Downing and Diane Sigman, son Dustin Downing, and sisters Kelly Downing and Eileen Holmquist.

He is survived by brothers Jerry Ray Downing of Martin City, Ernie Holmquist of Pueblo, Colorado, and Jeffry (Chris) Downing of Tacoma, Washington; and sister Leslie Ann (Tim) Breimon of Kalama, Washington.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at Hungry Horse Chapel, with a potluck reception following.
