Getts starts off tennis season undefeated in first matches

The Columbia Falls girls tennis team started the season on a strong note, dropping Corvallis 5-2 and Stevensville, 6-1 Saturday..

Emily Getts won both of her matches to start the year, dropping Emma Pickett of Corvallis, 6-2, 6-3 in No. 1 singles and Jackie Westman, 6-0, 6-1, of Stevi.

Sydney Grilley and Morgan Stenger also picked up early season winds in doubles, dropping Rebecca Weidkamp and Claire Pickett of Corvallis, 6-4, 7-5 and Allison Enzler and Danielle Hacke, 6-4, 7-5 of Stevi in a hard-fought match.

“Emily’s a little rusty, but it didn’t take long for her dominance to show. Every opponent she faces during the regular season will see beating her as a great accomplishment,” said coach Gene Marcille.

Marcille said it’s a good group of kids.

“This is a really fun group of girls to coach,” he said. He was also impressed with Samantha Gilk and Meghan McCallum teaming up in doubles. It was their first matches together and they won both.

On the boys side, Trevor Wick and Brock Denny beat Noah Breneman and Aksel Sorensen, 6-2, 6-1 of Stevi in No.1 doubles and then beat Easton Powell and Dylan Josey, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 of Corvallis. There were no singles matches.

The teams were scheduled to face off against Whitefish Tuesday after presstime.

On Friday, the girls squared off against Dillon and were edged, 4-3. Getts dropped Mariah McClure, 5-1, 6-1 and Molly Schmit beat Nicole Hritsco, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5. Harley Molchan dropped Maggie Magee, 6-4, 6-2 for the team’s wins.
