A 30-year-old Polebridge and Park City, Utah man drowned Monday evening in the North Fork of the Flathead River. He was apparently “surfing” on the river with a surfboard that was to tied to a snag across the river with a rope. He was trying to get on the surfboard when he became tangled in the rope and the board and was submerged in the water, Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry reports.

Witnesses cut the rope from the snag which freed the male, and he was pulled from the river about 200 yards downstream. CPR was started by people on the scene, but was unsuccessful.

The ALERT helicopter, Three Rivers EMS, Blankenship Fire Department, Glacier National Park rangers and Flathead County Sheriff’s Deputies all responded to the scene.

The man’s name has not been released pending notification of kin.
