Reynolds Creek fire size reduced; Lake Ellen Wilson camp opens

With better mapping, the Reynolds Creek Fire in Glacier National Park has been officially listed at 3,158 acres. The fire is now 20 percent contained and saw rain on Saturday.

The weather forecast is promising more rain tonight and tomorrow, with a chance of snow above 8,000 feet. There’s seven aircraft on the fire and 450 firefighters.

The fire this morning was showing little smoke as temperatures cooled and humidity was above 70 percent. The backcountry restrictions near the fire have eased a bit in the past day. The Lake Ellen Wilson backcountry campground has reopened and the Sperry Trail is now open to Gunsight Pass, but closed beyond that to the east.

The Going-to-the-Sun Road remains closed at Big Bend, however.

An informational meeting is planned for 6 p.m. tonight at the West Glacier Community Building in Glacier National Park. Crews continue to cut direct lines around the fire and drop snags that are close to the Sun Road.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
