Glacier Rim fire 70 percent contained

Stoked by high winds the night of July 4, the Glacier Rim Fire slopped over containment lines on its south and southwest flank, growing another 15 acres.

The fire is now at 100 acres. Cooler temperatures July 5 helped firefighters get a line around the slop area and the fire is now listed at 70 percent contained.

Forest Service Road No. 316 — the Canyon Creek Road, is closed to vehicles as firefighters are using it to reach the south end of the fire.

The fire is burning in the old Robert Fire burn of 2003 in downed timber and brush, just north of the Glacier Rim river access site up the North Fork.

The North Fork Road and the river east of the fire remain open, though people are asked not to stop in the fire area.

Spot fires in Glacier have been declared dead out. The human caused fire was started June 27. About 90 people are still assigned to the blaze.

Temperatures later in the week are supposed to warm up again.
