Bigfork’s Vinny Quirk placed first at the Ted Kato wrestling meet in Thompson Falls on Saturday. Quirk (205) pinned Glacier High School’s Kellen Bemis in 1:16 for the win.

120-pound Connor Meyer placed third at the meet and Bigfork took ninth overall.

The Ted Kato tournament consisted of good competition against Western class B and C opponents for Bigfork, the type they’ll need to beat in divisionals to get to the state meet, head coach Josh Feller said.

“Now is the time for the wrestlers to dig deep and decide what the next four weeks are going to be like for them,” Feller said. “They are only guaranteed to wrestle through divisionals.”

On Friday Bigfork wrestled at the Plains Quad. While the team wrestled pretty flat Castor Conley at 113-pounds and Meyer both won multiple matches.

Meyer faced a tough matchup against Arlee’s TJ Knoll but came up short in the third period losing 5-4.

“Both Castor and Connor wrestled with confidence and intensity, setting the tone in each of their matches,” Feller said. “It is something that many of the other wrestlers need to develop.”

Quirk wrestled an exhibition match in Plains against Arlee’s Alex Bertolt, and while the score ended 12-2 in Alex’s favor, most of the points were scored at the end.

“It was a very fun match to watch, and gave Vinny a good experience against a very technically sound wrestler,” Feller said.

The Vikings will head to the Choteau Classic this weekend, which starts Friday at noon, and runs all day Saturday. Most of the Class B and C wrestlers will be at the tournament. Feller hopes to place three or more wrestlers at the meet.

Thursday, Jan. 22 is Bigfork’s only home meet and will feature Noxon, Eureka, Mission/Charlo and Ronan. The meet starts at 5 p.m. Any Bigfork Little Guy wrestlers who arrive wearing their shirt will be given free entrance.
