Water compact concerns

| October 17, 2014 6:22 AM

If you are concerned about the proposed Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes Reserved Water Rights Compact, I urge you to attend a Flathead County Commissioner meeting next Wednesday, Oct. 22, starting at 9 a.m. in the Commissioner Chambers on the third floor of the remodeled courthouse, 800 South Main.

You may recall on Jan. 3 this year, commissioners Gary Krueger and Cal Scott signed a letter in support of the proposed compact with CSKT. These commissioners voted without allowing any public hearings on this important issue.

Commissioner Pam Holmquist declined to sign the January letter. Now, at the conclusion of the public hearing next week, Commissioner Holmquist will ask the other two commissioners to consider rescinding their support for the proposed compact.

Even if you don’t plan to speak, it is important to show up for the hearing (I urge you to show up early) and support Commissioner Holmquist in her efforts to rescind the January approval letter. If not able to attend, I encourage you to send your thoughts in writing to enelson@flathead.mt.gov. Thank you.
