Getts top seed for girls singles at divisional

Emily Getts will head into this week’s Northwest Class A Divisional tennis tournament as the top seed in the conference. Getts wrapped up the regular season last week with a win at home May 8, blanking Libby’s Melanie Oedewaldt, 6-0, 6-0.

A sophomore, Getts has lost one match all season long to Havre’s top seed at the Cut Bank tournament earlier this year. Getts’ game isn’t fancy — she just consistently returns the ball and puts it in a place that’s tough for her opponent to get to.

“It’s been a long time since the Wildkats have had a No. 1 seed in singles,” coach Jerry Smalley said. “We’ve had plenty of No.1 doubles, so this year is certainly different for us.”

The tournament will start Thursday at Flathead Valley Community College. Matches will be held at the Summit in event of rain. Matches will start at 9:30 a.m.

“It’s a fun group of girls who have worked hard all season to overcome a lack of experience since we graduated so many seniors last year,” Smalley said.

For the boys, Gavin Thelen got a win in No. 1 singles against Libby’s Jason Brandt, 6-2, 6-4, but the Wildcats’ top doubles team of Caleb Baumann and Mason Gedlaman let one slip away to Jason Schnackenberg and Cody Wood.

Baumann and Gedlaman won the first set 6-3 but then lost the next two 6-3, 6-4. The pair will try to right the ship this week, as they and Thelen are the top boys prospects for a trip to the state tournament. The doubles pair are a fourth seed in the tourney, and Thelen is the third seed.
