The Flathead National Forest encourages everyone to participate in National Get Outdoors Day on June 14.

The Flathead Forest offers numerous outdoor opportunities, including 10 concessioner-managed campgrounds, 17 Forest Service-managed campgrounds, 14 cabin rentals, more than 2,000 miles of trails, river access sites on all three forks of the Flathead River, more than a million acres of wilderness and 219 miles of Wild and Scenic Rivers.

The Summit Nature Center at the Summit House on Big Mountain at Whitefish Mountain Resort will open for the summer season on June 14. The center is a fun place for families with plenty of hands-on discovery.

The Flathead Forest will also have a booth set up at Lone Pine State Park in Kalispell on June 14 where visitors can find recreation information and outdoor activities for kids, including the Junior Forest Ranger activity guide.

Flathead Forest officials remind visitors of many late-spring hazards. Many higher elevation roads and trails are still snow covered. Lower elevation trails and roads are still being cleared of winter debris. Visitors may encounter road work, including blading, brushing and ditch cleaning. Work areas will be clearly signed and motorists are asked to use caution.

Visitors also may encounter log trucks on the East Side Hungry Horse Reservoir Road. Drivers are encouraged to drive slowly and to expect to encounter trucks when rounding corners.
