All-Stars fall in last World Series game
The Glacier All-Stars were unable to come back from a late deficit and lost their final game of the Babe Ruth U13 World Series on Wednesday, Aug. 20.
The All-Stars fell to the New England champions from Waterford, Conn., 7-6, in a back and forth contest from the opening pitch.
After getting three quick outs to start the game, the All-Stars led off the home half of the first inning with a single from Coby Clark-Dickinson. He advanced to third on a stolen base and a passed ball.
Lee Walburn scored his teammate three batters later with a single through the left side of the infield. Forrest Kobelt then singled but was caught trying to extend the play.
Waterford soon answered, scoring two runs in the second inning. They scored three more in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead.
The All-Stars led off the bottom of the third with a double from Clark-Dickinson, and after a pair of fly outs had five straight singles, scoring four runs to tie the game.
The All-Stars took the lead for the third time when Walburn drove in Clark-Dickinson on a single in the fourth inning. The All-Stars led 6-5 going into the last three innings.
Waterford scored in the fifth to tie the game again, then reached on an error in the sixth, only to score two batters later and take back the lead.
Kobelt reached first with one out in the seventh inning on his third single of the game to get the game-tying run on board, but a grounder to the third baseman in the next at bat served up an easy double play to end the game.
The All-Stars finished with 15 hits. Clark-Dickinson, Kobelt, Walburn and Drew Morgan each had three.
The Glacier All-Stars, who finished 0-4 at the World Series. Host team Glen Allen and Virginia state champion Gainesville-Haymarket defended the Commonwealth, each going undefeated in pool play and taking the top seeds in the American and National divisions, earning a bye in the playoffs.
Pacific Southwest champion Chandler-Mesa, Arizona earned the second seed from the American, and Southeast champion from Greenville, North Carolina the third. Mid-Atlantic champion Broomall-Newtown, Pennsylvania is the second seed from the National, Janesville, Wisconsin is the third.
