Sport shooting prohibited in experimental forest
Flathead National Forest officials announced last week that effective immediately, recreational sport shooting is prohibited in the Coram Experimental Forest.
Officials said there were concerns about public safety. The prohibition applies to the discharge of firearms, air rifles and gas guns but not to people engaged in legal hunting activities.
The Coram Experimental Forest is a research and recreation area just southeast of Martin City. It’s a high use area close to population centers that sees frequent use by mountain bikers, horseback riders and legal off-highway riders. It’s also a study area for researchers.
This firearms regulation is common across the National Forest lands. Violators can be fined up to $5,000 for individuals or $10,000 for organizations, with jail time up to six months. For more information, call 406-387-3800.
