Volleyball loses home opener to Copperheads
The Whitefish volleyball team’s first match in the newly refurbished gym didn’t go as they had hoped.
The Anaconda Copperheads rolled the Lady Dogs in four sets to easily take the nonconference match Saturday afternoon.
Anaconda took control early with a 25-19 win in the opening frame.
Whitefish showed their grit in a hard-fought second set.
Senior Marlow Schulz served up five consecutive points for the Dogs, including three aces, to put Whitefish up 9-5.
The Copperheads responded with a run to regain the lead 14-9, but Whitefish battled to tie it at 20-20.
The teams would trade leads until it was 26-26.
Schulz slammed a powerful kill to put Whitefish up by one, then tallied a solo stuff block to score the win.
Anaconda cruised in the final two sets for the victory.
Schulz ended the match with six kills, three aces and two blocks.
Bekah Weaver and Allie Schulz each had eight assists. Brittany Barnes led the way with 17 of Whitefish’s 73 digs.
On Thursday, Whitefish lost a conference match at Frenchtown 3-0.
