Stolen walkers returned to Coram couple

A good Samaritan has helped out a Coram couple who lost their walkers and canes after their car  was stolen recently and left abandoned up the Desert Mountain Road.

Eve Legault said she and her husband James Mullen were in their home on Aug. 25 around 9:30 p.m. when their unlocked 1995 Ford Taurus was taken out of their carport, 20 feet from their front door. Legault said they never heard the vehicle leave, but a neighbor later reported hearing some people rifling through a tool shed about that time.

The car was later found, but damaged. The thieves had ransacked the car and threw out the couple’s items, including walkers and canes.

But a person saw the story in last week’s Hungry Horse News and donated a walker to Legault.

“It’s the best walker I’ve ever had,” she said.

Meanwhile, a person who was driving an all-terrain vehicle up the Desert Mountain Road spotted the walkers in the ditch and returned them to the couple, Legault said.

Legault and Mullen are both retired. Legault said she had a stroke in 2006 and relies on a walker to get around. Her husband was working as a paramedic in Los Angeles when he was seriously injured in a head-on collision in 1978.
