Standing alone with Ostrom
Nice to see George Ostrom remembers the old days (Hungry Horse News Oct. 9). He always seemed to understand that sometimes a man has to stand alone to get something done. Best to point out here that when that happens, other folks often come forward with understanding and support, and a lonely endeavor becomes less lonely.
That’s certainly the case Oct. 12 as I managed to hold this year’s Le Grizz ultramarathon despite pointless political intervention.
Back in 1978, when I was running the Bob, George understood that undertaking. He contacted the Forest Service, and when I arrived at the Big Prairie Station 36 miles along, rangers furnished me cold lemonade.
I drank the whole pitcher. I really needed the sugar and refreshment and continued on rejuvenated. The outcome of that day could have been a lot different without the thoughtfulness of George and those rangers. See, I remember the old days, too.
