Softball looks to finish season strong

Whitefish’s softball schedule gets better before it gets worse.

The Lady Dogs travel to a tourney in Butte this weekend where they’ll face teams more evenly matched than those they face in the tough Northwest A conference.

Whitefish coach Carrie Lamb says the stretch of upcoming games is a chance to be competitive on the diamond and get results.

“It’s a big week for us and we’re looking to get a couple wins,” she said.

They wrap up the season with Frenchtown and Polson, two perennial softball powerhouses.

Last week, the Lady Dogs struggled against conference foes Columbia Falls and Libby.

Wildkat pitcher Ashley Trueblood threw a 1-hitter in the 22-0 rout.

Whitefish’s Margo Myers broke up the no hitter in the fifth inning with a nice double to the fence.

“It’s good for her to come around with the stick,” Lamb said. “That hit put a big smile on her face.”

Lamb said Columbia Falls hit the ball really well, while fielding errors plagued the Dogs.

“We made defensive errors and extended innings on our pitcher’s arm,” Lamb said. “That’s our biggest problem right now. More errors means our pitchers and catchers have to work harder.”

At Libby, Whitefish came out swinging, but the Loggers were in top form and easily took care of business in the 14-0 shutout.

Lamb says her team’s attitude and spirits remain high going into the final two weeks of the season.

She commended pitcher Lameuroux for her work on the mound.

“She’s really giving it everything she’s got,” Lamb said.

Lameuroux is hoping to walk on with the softball team at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

Lamb said Halle Reading has been critical at first base.

“She bailing her infielders out and making great scoops,” Lamb said. “She’s crucial to the team.”

Freshman catcher Maddie Davis is starting to elevate her game to the varsity level, Lamb added.

Standout slugger Malia Morris suffered a leg injury in the JV softball game Friday against Columbia Falls and missed the week of action.
