Associates volunteers

The Glacier National Park Volunteer Associates invites the public to their annual volunteer work day in the Park on Saturday, May 18. They will meet in the Community Center Building behind the headquarters building in West Glacier at 8:30 a.m. with a continenal breakfast followed by a short business meeting. They will then break into work groups for short projects on the west side, including trail clearing, work in the native plant nursery and building maintenance. Volunteers should bring a lunch. Institute volunteers

The Glacier Institute will hold its annual Volunteer Work Day at the Glacier Park Field Camp, in Glacier National Park one mile north of West Glacier, on Saturday, May 11, at 9 a.m. Volunteers are needed for cleaning, painting, light carpentry, outdoor raking, sweeping and other tasks. It’s helpful if volunteers bring carpentry tools, rakes, shop vacuums, wheelbarrows and work gloves. RSVP by calling 406-755-1211 or by e-mailing register@glacierinstitute.org. Harlequin ducks

The Glacier Institute will offer a course on “Glacier’s Harlequins” in Glacier National Park on Saturday, May 18. The class will follow McDonald Creek for 2-3 miles beginning at 9 a.m. Instructor John Ashley earned his bachelor’s in biology from the University of Montana. He has worked for many years to conserve harlequin ducks in Montana, Alberta and British Columbia. To register, call 755-1211 or visit online at www.glacierinstitute.org. Course fee is $65.

Park birding

The Flathead Audubon will host a birding trip in Glacier National Park limited to 20 people on Saturday, May 25, from 8 a.m. to noon. The focus will be on migrants, including harlequin ducks, vireos, warblers, black-backed woodpeckers, olive-sided flycatchers and northern hawk owls.
