The Glacier Avalanche girls hockey team pulled off the unexpected. They returned from the state tournament in Miles City with hardware in hand.

Glacier came out of nowhere to finish in third place with a pair of wins over rival Flathead.

“We completely surprised ourselves,” coach Lini Reading said.

Glacier opened the tourney strong by posting a 1-1 tie with Miles City.

“We scored first and dominated the whole game,” Reading said.

After a loss to Glasgow, the girls battled Bozeman to a 3-3 tie. The fell behind early 3-0 within the first few minutes, but then “finally woke up,” Reading said, and tallied three goals in the third period.

The two ties were enough for Glacier to move on the tourney.

The following day they faced Flathead and picked up a 5-2 win.

“The girls were really excited and everyone played as hard as they could,” Reading said.

That win put them in the third place game where they again faced Flathead.

The teams exchanged goals throughout, but Glacier got the last one to win 3-2.

“The entire weekend was a team effort,” Reading said. “It was a lot of fun. To see their excitement was great.”
