Name change

At the July 6 North Fork “Landowners’ Association” business meeting, Larry Wilson introduced a proposed amendment that would change the name of the association back to its original, the North Fork “Improvement Association.” Members will vote on that amendment at the Aug. 3 meeting.

After eight years under the new name, why is this an issue?

In July 2005, when I introduced the proposed amendment to change the name to the North Fork “Landowners’ Association,” I said the new name would better convey the mission and function of the organization to North Fork landowners, and increase membership and participation.

That is exactly what has happened. Because the new name was more inclusive and welcoming, membership has increased, people have become more involved in association activities, the social calendar has expanded, and community cohesion and neighborliness are now stronger than ever.

I’m not exactly sure why those who support this change find the name “Landowners’ Association” and the concept behind it so threatening. Perhaps it is the same thinking behind the bylaw that prohibits voting by proxy — thereby preventing dues-paying members from all over the country who are unable to attend meetings to vote on issues or elect board members. And I wonder whether they have considered the complicated and expensive process of changing the name of a 501(c)(4) corporation.

In any event, if you — as a North Fork “landowner” — are happy with the direction of the association and the positive results it has achieved under the name North Fork “Landowners’ Association,” please attend the Aug. 3 business and election meeting at Sondreson Hall and vote down this divisive proposed amendment.
