MDT seeking comments for Looking Glass Highway project

The Montana Department of Transportation is seeking comments on a proposed safety enhancement project on Highway 49. Also known as the Looking Glass Highway, the scenic highway runs along Glacier National Park from East Glacier to Kiowa Junction.

MDT proposes upgrading signs for the full length of the highway, about 11.42 miles. The project, tentatively scheduled for spring 2014, is aimed at addressing an identified trend of motorcycle crashes along the route. No new right-of-way or utility relocations will be needed.

Winding road signs will be posted every two miles after the roadway begins to climb and becomes curvilinear. “Pavement ends” and “rough road and/or bump” signs also will be posted, and regular reference posts will be installed to help emergency responders and the public.
