Rising Sun reopens to hard-side campers
Glacier National Park’s Rising Sun Campground reopened to hard-side camping only on Saturday, Aug. 10.
Recent bear incidents at the campground prompted a closure of the facility on Aug. 6. A small subadult black bear was involved with some incidents in the area within the last month.
In one incident, a small subadult black bear laid on a corner of a tent occupied by sleeping campers. The campers awoke and started yelling and saw a black bear running away.
Two other incidents in the campground and surrounding area are believed to involve the same bear — the bear snatching a pillow from a sleeping camper, and the bear going through some clothing laying along the lake shore.
There were no injuries. It appears that the bear is not looking for a food reward, or that it has received one, but is learning to approach and handle human materials.
