Sun Road bikers will find ice in places

Plow crews have hit the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park while other roads have been melting out after a week of warm weather.

The Sun Road is open to vehicles to Lake McDonald Lodge. Hikers and bikers can travel beyond, but they should expect ice on the pavement in some areas. Crews had plowed beyond Avalanche Creek by week’s end. There are no hiker biker restrictions on the weekends.

The Camas Road is plowed. It’s 90 percent free of snow and ice but not open to vehicles. The Inside North Fork Road has melted out on its own near Polebridge. The road is closed to vehicles, but is mostly free of snow through Big Prairie and reportedly free of snow and ice about three miles up the Bowman Lake Road as well.

On the east side, the Sun Road is open to Rising Sun to vehicles and there are no hiker-biker restrictions beyond that. The Many Glacier Road was plowed last week into the valley and is open to hikers and bikers but not vehicles on the weekends.

During the week, there are restrictions on hiking and biking on roads while plows are working. It’s best to check with the Park at 888-7800 or visit online at www.nps.gov/glac.
