Virginia Slater

Virginia M. “Jinny” Slater, 70, of Kingston, died at 4:40 a.m. Sunday, May 13, 2012, surrounded by family following a brief illness.

She was born July 21, 1941, in Sturgis, S.D., to Arthur B. and Clarine E. (Baker) Harker. On Nov. 17, 1962, she married Charles J. “Jake” Slater, who survives.

Also surviving are daughters and sons-in-law Kathy (Jim) Hehl, Lynchburg, Ohio; Jennifer Slater, Kingston; Rachel (Chris) Corcoran, Kingston; son and daughter-in-law David (Amy) Slater, Buffalo, W. Va.; her mother, Clarine E. Harker, Whitefish; grandchildren: Meghan (Will) Dehart; Christina (Matthew) Wendel; Travis Hehl; Jake Hehl; John Slater; Chelsey Slater; Emma Corcoran; Isaac Corcoran; great-grandchildren: Lilly Dehart, Andy Wendel and Eli Wendel; sisters and brothers-in-law Carol (Fred) Born, Trenton, N.J.; Peg Anderson, Dillon; Loretta (Nick) Poncelet, Whitefish; Barbara (Ric) Anderson, Columbia Falls; a brother and sister-in-law Jeff (Sheila) Harker, Columbia, Falls, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father; and a brother James Harker.

Jinny was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She worked as a school bus driver for nine years with Zane Trace Schools and volunteered with Adena Hospice. She was a member of the Hallsville Homemakers and the Belles and Beaus Square Dancing. She was a winter resident of Palms Estates in Lorida, Fla. She enjoyed painting, gardening and canning, crocheting, sewing and knitting.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 17, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Rev. Lawrence Hummer, celebrant. Burial will follow in Hallsville Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at Haller Funeral Home, where a wake service will be held at 8 p.m.
