Burning permits will be required in Flathead County from May 1 through June 30. Open burning is not allowed within the city limits of Whitefish, Kalispell and Columbia Falls. No burning is allowed from July 1 through Sept. 30.

For those with Internet access, burning permits are available by going online to www.firesafekalispell.com and filling out the on-line application. A permit will be e-mailed, and burners must have a copy of the permit with them when they burn. One permit will be required for each location, but the permit will be good through June 30.

For those without Internet access, burners can go to the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation office in Kalispell at 655 Timberwolf Parkway or the Flathead County Environmental Health office, in the Earl Bennett Building, 1035 First Avenue West, in Kalispell during office hours Monday through Friday.

It is a burner’s responsibility to call the Flathead County Air Quality Hotline at 751-8144 before burning. Burners also are responsible for any and all suppression costs if a fire escapes their control.
