Somers graphic designer creates art and a career

Editor’s note: The following feature was written by Somers Middle School seventh-grade student Allie Gagnon for a journalism project in Sara Walters’ class.

Gina Gagnon is a successful graphic designer from Somers who manages her own business, Snowghost Design. When asked why she wanted to do this job, she explained that she loves the creativity involved, and that her job isn’t like much of a job to her. Instead, she enjoys it and looks at it as something other than work.

While working in the field of graphic designing for nearly 20 years, she has dragged her feet during rough times and has cruised her way through the times when business is great.

Since this job takes a lot of her time, she often works a day or two on the weekends. So, there are down sides to being a graphic designer.

“One of the worst things about being a graphic designer is having deadlines,” she said.

It is challenging to please a client who wants something done as soon as possible because she has so many different things to do all at once.

Gagnon has done many interesting things for her clients. For example, she gets to design things for people with new inventions. She might design the wrapping, or a website for the invention, maybe even a poster.

Gagnon has even designed a giant puzzle for a family reunion, when the puzzle was put together it formed a large picture of the family.

The work she does for her clients are only one of the many interesting things about her job; the people she meets are interesting too. She meets people who are artists and even singers.

Graphic designers use advanced technology and Gagnon says that it can be hard to keep up-to-date with the new advances.

Gagnon encourages people to take interest in the field of graphic designing because you never know where it might take you, yet this job doesn’t work for everyone, you’re either good at it or you’re not.
