Musical comedy
The Columbia Falls High School Drama Club will perform the musical romp “When in Rome.” Performances will take place in the high school’s Little Theater on March 9, 10, 16 and 17 with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and performances starting at 7 p.m. The romantic comedy is about a peasant who falls in love with a princess and has to fight gladiators to get her. Tickets are $7 adults and $5 students and seniors, available at the high school office, at the door and at Glacier Wallflower.
Planning board meets
The Columbia Falls City-County Planning Board will hold a public hearing at the fire hall on Tuesday, March 13, at 6:30 p.m. to consider changes to the city’s subdivision regulations. The hearing is part of the overall process to update the Columbia Falls city code and bring it into compliance with new state laws. The board will also hold a growth policy update workshop.
Burning season started
The spring open burning season in Flathead County runs from March 1 through April 30. The Ventilation Hotline must be contacted for restrictions before burning by calling 751-8144. Prohibited materials include manmade and treated materials, and wood and wood waste from businesses or demolition. Burning is prohibited inside the Columbia Falls city limits, except small recreational fires limited to 36 inches in diameter.
Heritage Days

Park forum
A science forum on expanding the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park in British Columbia will take place at Grouse Mountain Lodge, in Whitefish, on Monday, March 12, from 7-9 p.m. Three researchers will talk about transboundary grizzly bear populations, aquatics, fisheries, ungulates and predator species. A $10 donation will be accepted at the door, and a cash bar will be available. For more information, call 837-0783.
Golf tourney
The fourth annual Chili Open golf tournament will take place at All Saints Episcopal Church on Saturday, March 10, with a shotgun format beginning at 10 a.m. Expect fun and laughs on a nine-hole golf course set up in the snow by the church on Conn Road, halfway between Columbia Falls and Whitefish. The event is a fundraiser for the Flathead County Animal Shelter, the Spay and Neuter Task Force, and the Humane Society. Cost is $10.
Dress sale
The Columbia Falls High School sophomore class will hold another discount prom dress sale from 4 to 7 p.m. March 9 at the school. Dresses cost $15 each.
Congressional art
Montana high school students can see their original artwork displayed for a year in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., by entering Montana’s Congressional Art Competition. The House of Representatives holds the competition each spring to recognize outstanding artwork by high school students from each congressional district. The grand prize winner and a guest will also be invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception in Washington in June. All submissions are due by April 27.
