Stranded skiers rescued from Glacier Park

| January 16, 2012 7:35 AM

(AP) — Glacier National Park officials say a helicopter on Sunday plucked two stranded cross-country skiers out of the backcountry.

Spokeswoman Denise Germann says the husband and wife sent an emergency call from a special device about 8 p.m. Saturday from a remote location in the North Fork area of the park about six miles north of Polebridge.

Germann says bad weather, difficult trail conditions and darkness delayed the rescue until Sunday morning when park rangers and members of the Flathead County Search and Rescue went in on snowshoes and skis.

Germann says the weather cleared allowing a helicopter to retrieve the 46-year-old man and 39-year-old woman.

Germann says the couple returned home using their own vehicle about 2 p.m. Sunday.
