Six wrestlers go to state
Whitefish
will send six wrestlers to the Class A state tournament this week
in Billings.
Heavyweight junior Wolf Zinke earned
his ticket to state after making the championship finals at the
divisional tournament on Saturday in Columbia Falls. At state he
will take on the third ranked wrestler from the Southwest.
“Zinke has his eye on placing,”
Whitefish coach Ryan Boyle said. “He’s been there twice, he knows
what’s going on. He’s pretty focused.”
Also earning a trip to Billings are
105-pounder Garrett Rice, 112-pounder Matt Barton, 119-pounder
Trysten Armstrong, 189-pounder Jacob Forrest and 215-pounder Aaron
Vick.
Vick, a freshman, made the consolation
finals in the divisional tournament after tallying two wins.
“He stepped up and said he wanted it
and wrestled really well,” Boyle said. “There’s no reason he can’t
place at state if he wrestles like he did.”
Rice picked up his first win of the
year in the fifth/sixth place match, which got him into the state
tourmament. Both Armstrong and Forrest have previously made trips
to the state tourney.
Boyle said the team showed vast
improvement at the divisional meet compared to last season.
“We did 400 percent better than last
year,” he said. “We didn’t win any matches last year, and this year
we won four. We’re steadily improving.”
The team leaves Thursday for
Billings.
