Sidewalks planned for Sixth Street

The West 6th Street and Geddes Avenue road reconstruction project is slated to start in late July after crews wrap up improvements to the lift station. Improvements include a new road surface, sidewalks and a bike path along Scott Avenue.

City councilors approved Phase I of the project to go out for bid at their April 16 meeting. Phase I improves a zigzag section of West 6th Street, O’Brien Avenue, Flint Avenue and West 5th Street between Baker and Geddes Avenue. Total cost is estimated at $980,000, which is to be paid with resort tax dollars. Work should be completed by October.

A five-foot wide sidewalk will run on the north side of Sixth from Baker Avenue to Scott Avenue where it then moves to the south side of the street at a crosswalk. The sidewalk runs up the west side of Flint and the south side of West 5th Street before connecting with a sidewalk on Geddes.

A short section of Scott Avenue is to be reconstructed as well. The street goes north from Sixth Street and dead ends at the Riverside Park footbridge. Council approved plans that will add a five-foot paved bike and pedestrian path along the east side of Scott to the footbridge. A paved parking and turnaround area with four spaces will go at the end of the street just before a private driveway. Two large cottonwood trees will be removed.
