The offense sputtered. The defense made some mistakes. And it all added up to a 5-0 blanking in the state Class A soccer semifinals for the Columbia Falls girls in Billings on Oct. 15. The Wildkats ended the season 11-2-1 overall.

Billings Central scored at the 12- and 28-minute marks to go up 2-0. But a Lady Rams rebound score on a direct kick two minutes in the second half proved to be the dagger in the Kats' season.

"We started OK," coach Greg Trenerry said. "But we didn't play with confidence. We didn't generate offense all game. I know we can play better than that."

The Kats scored 13 goals against Loyola Sacred Heart in the quarterfinals, but Central was a far more formidable opponent. The Lady Rams have won the last three state Class A soccer titles and played very well.

"They're a well-coached, disciplined team," Trenerry said.

Billings out shot the Kats 15-4.

Central will face Hamilton this week for the title, while the Kats reload for next season. The Kats will lose nine seniors, but the team has a lot of talent coming up the ranks and returning.

Scoring leader Danielle Delventhal will return as a senior. She set a new state Class A season-scoring record with 30 goals.
