First Best Place is asking the community to help raise funds for a new boiler at Glacier Discovery Square and hope the Night of Lights weekend will be a good time for locals to make a contribution.

Discovery Square provides the community with a much-needed meeting space. According to the nonprofit group, it has served more than 20,000 users in each of the last two years.

Recently, however, the building's boiler broke down and will need to be replaced. The new boiler will be an energy-efficient system that will be part of the building's permanent remodeling.

But with the Night of Lights scheduled for Friday, Dec. 2, something needs to be done now.

"This weekend, we are using temporary heaters to make the space available for this great community event," First Best Place executive director Barry Conger said. "But that is not a permanent solution."

The group will accept donations online at www.firstbestplace.org and will have several donation booths set up at the square during Friday and Saturday's holiday events.
